The use of water power to generate electricity has contributed to the development of Brazil since the 19th century, with greater emphasis after the Second World War, with emphasis on Itaipu Binational Power Plant, considered one of the largest in the world.

For the water power to be transformed into electrical energy, a large contingent of equipment is involved. Among them the hydraulic turbines Its operation depends on proper planning and quality parts, accessories and components for hydraulic turbines It’s also important to have services for hydraulic turbines, performed by a company that knows how it works and ensures monitoring, organization and accuracy.

About parts, accessories, components and services for hydraulic turbines, you can count on Wortice, which is at your disposal to receive and analyze your requirements with professionalism, credibility and assertiveness.

Understanding water turbines

The existing turbines in hydroelectric plants are responsible for receiving the initial water flow, directing it and, within this system, generating mechanical energy that will be transformed into electrical energy.

Since the 19th century, Brazil has shown itself to be a great connoisseur and employer of this technology for the supply of electricity to households, businesses, industries and rural areas. As we can see, inside a power plant, the hydraulic turbines are the heart composed of two main parts:

  • Distributor or Stator (fixed part), which directs and regulates the flow of water;
  • Impeller (or Wheel), which transfers the kinetic energy of the water to the structure where the turbine is mounted.

The two main parts are formed by the following parts for hydraulic turbines:

  • Guide bearing;
  • Thrust bearing;
  • Bearing;
  • Sleeve;
  • Metallic sleeve;
  • Sealing Bushing;
  • Guide bushing;
  • Seals;
  • Sealing Oil;
  • Rotor;
  • Blades;
  • Propellers;
  • Shaft;
  • Distributor;
  • Spiral Box;
  • Snail Box;
  • Generator

Wortice’s professionals with more than 45 years of experience perform a variety of services for hydraulic turbines that will improve performance and production. To learn more about our company and solutions, visit our website.

Types of Hydraulic Turbines

Types of Hydraulic Turbines

There are three types of hydraulic turbines, whose use must meet production requirements:

  • Francis turbine

Created by the French engineer James B. Francis in 1848, it’s the most used type for altitude differences from 10 meters to 400 meters, whose water flow is from two meters to 100 cubic meters per second. Its operation allows water to reach the Impeller in a spiral duct. The fixed part directs the water to the Wheel's propellers.

  • Pelton turbine

Created by the American carpenter and inventor Lester A. Pelton in 1879. It was “inspired” by the operating system of the mills. This type of hydroelectric turbine is used for situations where the height difference is between 300 meters and 1,400 meters and where the water flow is less than 50 cubic meters per second.

  • Kaplan turbine

Developed by an Austrian professor named Viktor Kaplan in 1913, it’s also inspired by another existing and widely used equipment at the time: the ship's propellers. As it’s designed differently from the previous ones, it allows its performance to be improved, when applied in plants with a small difference in altitude and with flows greater than 200 cubic meters per second.

For a plant to work with its full potential, it’s required to create a specific maintenance program that includes the replacement and repair of parts, components and accessories for hydraulic turbines.

In this scenario, Wortice has as a solution. Contact us and request a Quotation for your requirements.

Hydraulic turbine wear

Hydraulic turbine wear

All wear and tear results in financial losses, with reduced production and excessive spending to correct damage. That is why it’s very important in power generation plants from the use of water, the correct identification of wear on parts, components and accessories for hydraulic turbines They can be:

  • By Erosion: result of the impact of particles presents in the water (sand, stones, among others). In this case, it’s recommended that the parts, components and accessories for hydraulic turbines are made of stainless steel with the application of other components in their coatings.
  • By Cavitation: result of the collapse of gas or vapor bubbles due to the reduction of hydrostatic pressure, when water is moving. It’s worn and tear due to fatigue, because it’s the repetition of the same event. For the solution of this problem, materials more resistant to impact must be used in the parts, components and accessories for hydraulic turbines.
